Summary

The research addresses the challenge of designing, deploying and maintaining ubiquitous computing environments, where devices and services are seamlessly integrated into everyday life. It argues that successful Ubicomp design requires a multidisciplinary framework going beyond technology — incorporating social, legal and economic perspectives to improve user experience.

A framework synthesising context awareness, privacy and adaptation is applied to a wireless local area network as a case study, then validated through an online survey of Wi-Fi users. The survey surfaced confusion between privacy and security, insufficient user information, and unclear legal implications of open Wi-Fi access.
